Nourishing Blue Smoothie

Gather ’round mermaids, unicorn-enthusiasts and shark-lovers — this mystical blue drink will knock your socks off.

Nothing says Shark Week like a refreshing tropical blue smoothie! While you’re glued to the Discovery Channel, engrossed in the latest Jaws-inspired program, take a commercial break to whip up this quick, easy, anti-inflammatory treat!

Aside from being dairy-free, vegan and insanely delicious, this smoothie is also packed with the latest superfood – Blue Spirulina! Also known as Blue Majik, this mermaid powder is a proprietary, chemical-free extract of Arthrospira platensis (Spirulina). Clinical research suggests that Blue Majik may support healthy inflammation responses, healthy joints and flexibility, antioxidant and cellular protection, AND increased energy, vitality and endurance. (At least, according to E3Live).

Other nourishing ingredients include:

Bananas – Loaded with essential vitamins and minerals such as potassium, calcium, manganese, magnesium, iron, folate, niacin, riboflavin, and B6. The high iron content is helpful to those dealing with anemia, they’re easy to digest with “binding qualities” to help fellow IBD patients, and they’re high in fiber, keeping you fuller longer.

Pineapples – Rich in vitamins, enzymes and antioxidants, this tropical fruit is a powerhouse. Fiber, vitamin C and manganese are at the top of the list, but pineapple also leads in anti-inflammatory properties thanks to a little enzyme called Bromelain.

Peaches – Fresh peaches are a moderate source of antioxidants and vitamin C which is required for the building of connective tissue inside the human body. Consumption of foods that are rich in vitamin C can help develop resistance against infections and eliminate harmful free radicals that cause certain cancers (Source).

Blue Spirulina – Excellent source of vitamins A, K1, K2, B12 and iron, manganese, and chromium, as well as a powerful antioxidant, phycocyanin.

Flaxseed – Each tablespoon of ground flaxseed contains about 1.8 grams of plant omega-3 essential fatty acids, which is clinically proven to reduce inflammation in auto-immune diseases (Source).

Chia Seeds – Another excellent source of omega-3 (see above), in addition to fiber, antioxidants, iron, and calcium. Each 1-ounce serving of chia seeds also contains 5.6 grams of protein.

Nourishing Blue Smoothie

1/2 frozen banana

1/2 cup frozen peaches

1/2 cup frozen pineapple

1T blue spirulina

1t flaxseed meal

1t chia seeds

1 scoop vegan vanilla protein powder

1 cup coconut milk


Combine ingredients in blender. Blend until smooth, adding ice or additional milk as needed for desired consistency. Enjoy!
