Chocolate Collagen Smoothie

Okay, you guys. I’m SO stoked to share this recipe. If you follow me on Instagram, you know how much I’m struggling with weight gain. Whether I’m flaring or needing extra calories, shakes and smoothies are my jam.

July 1, I jumped on the collagen bandwagon and started a 30-day trial of Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides. I initially planned on adding it to my morning coffee, but with the need for extra calories, I’ve taken it up a notch and concocted this epic Chocolate Coffee Collagen Avocado Protein Smoothie!!

Now wipe off that drool and keep reading…

The key to gaining weight is a balance of healthy fats and protein and this recipe packs the best of both worlds. Whether it’s a breakfast on-the-go, or a decadent late-night dessert, this smoothie satisfies all the right taste buds.acs_0010.jpg

I start this smoothie with half a frozen banana. With pre-frozen fruit, you can cut down on the number of ice cubes (which only take up space that could otherwise be used to pack in more calories). Bananas are high in calories and start your smoothie off with the perfect creamy base.

Next, choosing the right protein powder may be the most important part. My two favorites are Optimum Nutrition Pro Gainer, Double Chocolate and Muscle Milk Gainer, Chocolate. Both pack a huge punch in the calorie department, they blend smoothly without the dreaded chalky consistency, and the chocolate flavor is a rich treat.

Avocado and whole Greek yogurt contribute healthy fats, honey adds a touch of sweetness from a clean, natural source, collagen peptides for gut and joint health, cocoa powder for a bit of extra flavor and cold coffee because… coffee. Caffeine is life. No explanation needed.

Add a few ice cubes according to your preference and blend until smooth. In less than five minutes, you’ll have a 600 calorie smoothie with 28g of protein, 96g of carbs and 14g of fat. This entire recipe fits perfectly into my 16-oz single serve Ninja blender cup, but you could also double the recipe for even more calories, if needed.

Happy blending!
